MILDURA, VIC, AUSTRALIA - OCTOBER 12: Dead carp lie on the shore of Lake Hawthorn October 12, 2007 in Mildura, Victoria, Australia. This lake was created by river regulation, as a drainage lake for irrigation, but became a permanent habitat for a variety of fish including the Hardyhead, which is almost extinct because of the drought. When scientist saw the larger fish, including carp, dying in high numbers because of lack of oxygen from the lake drying up, they began a race to collect some of the smaller native species who have been loosing their overall population in the river system. The Murray-Darling Basin of Australia has been plagued with severe drought since the late 1990's and many growers and policy makers are being forced to work on implementing more efficient irrigation systems.
