COORONG, SA, AUSTRALIA - MARCH 05: CSIRO Scientists, Paul Shand (right) and Richard Merry take soil samples on the dried up lake bed of Lake Albert March 5, 2008 in South Australia, Australia. The lake is part of the Lower Lakes of the Murray-Darling Basin where water levels have dropped at an alarming rate due to drought and over-use by irrigators for agricultural. As these bodies of water dry up, the bottom soil turns to sulfuric acid when highly concentrated, saline nutrients are exposed to oxygen. This is a widespread problem in the bottom end of the Murray-Darling Basin, where bodies of water that were made permanent by the irrigation system have dried up since the drought. The Murray-Darling Basin has been plagued with severe drought since the late 1990s and many growers and policy makers are being forced to find and implement more efficient irrigation systems.
