STAFFORD, NJ - SEPTEMBER 21: An aerial view of the Beach Haven West housing development next to protected wetlands September 21, 2003 in Stafford, New Jersey. The site that Beach Haven West is located on was known as Remson Meadows along the Manahawkin Bayfront. The Shapiro Brothers bought the marshes in 1950 to develop the area with summer vacation homes. However, the intended development was never fully completed, due to a lack of permits and increasing pressure from the EPA. Eventually the Wetlands Protection Act of 1970 kept the community from expanding further. The Jersey Shore, a 127 mile stretch of coastline known for its variety of beaches, boardwalks, small towns, natural beauty and summer crowds, has been a popular summer destination for over a century.
